The main Etsy fees at a glance
Think of an order as a stack of separate charges, not one percentage. Each fee has its own trigger and calculation base. That is why two orders with the same item price can produce different fee totals.
| Fee | Charge | When and how it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 USD | Charged when a listing is published, whether or not it sells. A listing lasts four months; renewals and additional units from multi-quantity listings usually incur another $0.20. |
| Transaction | 6.5% | Applied to the item price plus shipping charged to the buyer and gift wrap. |
| Payment processing | Varies | A percentage plus a fixed fee, based on the bank account’s country. The total sale price base includes shipping and applicable sales tax. |
| Offsite Ads | 12% or 15% | Only for orders attributed to Offsite Ads, subject to the shop threshold and a $100 cap per attributed order. |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Only when the listing currency differs from the Payment account currency. |
| Regulatory operating | Country-specific | Applies only in certain countries; check the official policy for your location. |
A checkable example: a $25 US order
Assume a US bank account with Etsy Payments, USD for both the listing and Payment account, a $25 item price, $0 shipping charged to the buyer, $0 gift wrap and $0 sales tax. Include a $0.20 listing or renewal allocation for the unit sold. This example excludes Offsite Ads, Etsy Ads, currency conversion, shop setup, shipping labels, returns, withdrawals and special taxes.
| Line item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee allocation | Flat charge | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | $25 × 6.5% = $1.625, rounded | $1.63 |
| Payment processing | $25 × 3% + $0.25 | $1.00 |
| Total fees | $0.20 + $1.63 + $1.00 | $2.83 |
| Balance after fees | $25.00 − $2.83 | $22.17 |
Each fee is rounded separately in this example. The $22.17 balance after fees is not profit. You still need to subtract product costs, packaging, actual postage, returns and other operating costs. The calculator keeps that distinction visible by showing the fee-adjusted balance and your result after your own costs.
The calculation base matters
The 6.5% transaction fee is not based only on the item price. Shipping you charge the buyer and gift wrap are included. Payment processing has a broader defined base: the total sale price, including shipping and applicable sales tax. Keeping these bases separate prevents a common mistake—using one subtotal for every fee.
Charged shipping is also different from your actual postage cost. Moving an amount between the item price and buyer-charged shipping does not remove it from the transaction-fee base. Actual postage is your own expense, not the same thing as the shipping amount shown to the buyer.
Fixed charges matter most on lower-value orders. The $0.20 listing allocation and the fixed part of payment processing do not shrink when the item price falls, so they represent a larger share of a small order.
Payment processing depends on the account country
Payment processing is separate from the 6.5% transaction fee. Its percentage and fixed amount depend on where your bank account is located. For the country schedules covered in this guide’s source data:
| Bank account / order category | Processing fee |
|---|---|
| United States | 3% + $0.25 |
| United Kingdom | 4% + £0.20 |
| Canada — domestic and US orders | 3% + C$0.25 |
| Canada — other international orders | 4% + C$0.25 |
| Australia — domestic orders | 3% + A$0.25 |
| Australia — international orders | 4% + A$0.25 |

Offsite Ads only affects attributed orders
Offsite Ads is not a fee on every sale. It applies when an order is attributed to Etsy’s external advertising, including attribution within 30 days of a click. For shops with less than $10,000 USD in sales over a continuous 365-day period, the rate is 15% and participation is optional. At or above that threshold, the rate is 12% and participation is required on an ongoing basis. The fee is capped at $100 per attributed order.
This charge sits on top of the ordinary fee stack for the attributed order. When comparing prices or advertising outcomes, model attributed and non-attributed orders separately rather than applying one blended assumption to every sale.
Currency conversion is not every cross-border order
The 2.5% currency conversion fee applies when your listing currency and Payment account currency differ. A buyer being in another country does not, by itself, establish that condition. If both currencies are the same, this fee does not apply.
Check both currency settings before adding the fee to an estimate. SellerMath also has a dedicated Currency Conversion Fee Calculator for that specific scenario.
Country rules and taxes need separate checks
Some countries have a Regulatory Operating fee; it should not be treated as universal. Taxes also need careful labels. Sales tax collected from a buyer is not the same thing as VAT, GST or special taxes applied to seller fees. Your account terms and location can change which charges appear and how they are calculated.
Use the official country-specific policies and your own account statement to confirm those items. Avoid copying another seller’s fee total when their bank country, currencies, ad attribution or tax treatment differs from yours.
Turn the explanation into an order estimate
Start with the item price, buyer-charged shipping and gift wrap. Apply the transaction and processing bases independently, include the listing allocation, and then add only the conditional fees that apply. Finally, subtract your own product and operating costs if you want a profit estimate rather than merely the balance after Etsy fees.
