Why the shipping line does not change Etsy's fees

A common misconception is that charging shipping separately increases fees, or that free shipping reduces them. In fact Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing both apply to the item price plus shipping charged to the buyer. Whether you charge $30 + $6 shipping or $36 with free shipping, the fee base is $36 either way. The only thing that changes is who absorbs the real-world postage cost — and how the listing converts.

Conversion is the genuine argument for free shipping. Etsy has long given US search visibility preference to listings with a free shipping guarantee on orders of $35 or more, and buyers anchor on the total at checkout: a lower item price with a shipping line often feels more expensive than the same total presented as one number. The risk is that sellers absorb postage without re-pricing, quietly donating their margin to the conversion rate. This calculator exists to make the trade explicit: Scenario B shows exactly what free shipping costs you at your current price, and the solved price shows what the item must cost for the strategy to pay for itself.

How the solved price is calculated

With free shipping, your order total is just the item price P. Fees are the $0.20 listing allocation, 6.5% of P for the transaction fee, your country's processing percentage of P plus its fixed amount. Profit is P minus those fees, minus product cost, actual postage and other costs. Setting profit equal to your target margin times P and solving for P gives: P = (costs + 0.20 + fixed processing) ÷ (1 − 0.065 − processing rate − target margin). If the denominator gets small — high target margin relative to fees — the required price rises sharply, which is the mathematical way of saying some listings simply cannot offer free shipping profitably.

Practical guidance

If the solved price is close to your current item price, free shipping is cheap to adopt and likely worth the conversion benefit. If it is far above, consider alternatives: offer free shipping only above the $35 basket threshold by nudging bundles ("buy two, shipping is on me"), which dilutes both postage and fixed fees across more items. Heavy or internationally shipped items deserve special caution — postage that scales with destination can turn a profitable listing into a loss on specific orders even when the average looks fine.

Frequently asked questions

Does free shipping still help in Etsy search?

Etsy has historically boosted US listings offering free shipping on $35+ orders. Search algorithms change, so treat this as a conversion lever more than a guaranteed ranking lever — and never a reason to sell below cost.

Should I just add postage to my item price?

Only if the resulting price stays competitive. The solved price above is the version that also preserves your margin after fees; a simple price-plus-postage addition usually lands close but can fall short on low-margin listings.

Are Offsite Ads included?

No — both scenarios assume no ad attribution. If a meaningful share of your orders comes through Offsite Ads, model that first with the Offsite Ads calculator, then revisit shipping.
